Wilsons Quarterly ‘Behind the Strategy’ Series
Tue 11th May, 2021

The ‘Behind the Strategy’ series of events for our Private Wealth clients concluded last week, providing our clients with the opportunity to hear from our Investment Strategy Group and their observations from the year so far.

Our team of highly experienced investment experts David Cassidy and John Lockton, are the driving force behind our Private Wealth Advisory investment recommendations and asset allocation strategies. The quarterly series of events allow our clients to delve deeper into the thinking behind our investment decisions and speak directly with the investment team.

“It is great to be able to see our clients in person again, it’s an informal environment where they can ask the questions that are of most interest to them and gives us the chance to shed light on some of the more complex issues facing financial markets,” said Cassidy.

Held in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, the events provide one of our Senior Financial Advisors with the opportunity to host and guide the panel discussion. Their unique relationship and insight into client circumstances ensures a dynamic and engaging conversation, centered on topics relevant to our Private Wealth clients.

Private Wealth Portfolio Manager and host of the Brisbane event, Paul Bryant said, “It’s valuable for our clients to have the opportunity to meet with the Investment Strategy team. The intimate environment enables lively discussions and provides the platform for clients to ask about topics that aren’t necessarily touched upon in research reports.

“For the Brisbane event, we were lucky enough to have Jason Ortham from Hyperion Global join the discussion to offer his thoughts on the key thematics likely to drive equity market performance in 2021 and the clients found it really engaging.”

Key themes covered across the events:

  • Whether the world is in a valuation bubble and our view on equity valuations.
  • Prospects over the next 12 months, given the stock market recoveries occurring around the world.
  • Where the Australian dollar is headed.
  • Whether bond yields will short circuit the bull market in stocks.
  • What the attractive asset classes are.
  • What the most promising sectors are given domestic equities are showing good value.
  • Our thoughts on domestic house prices.

The Investment Strategy team is led by David Cassidy, who has more than 25 years’ experience as one of Australia’s leading investment strategists. Prior to joining Wilsons, David was a Managing Director and Head of Investment Strategy at UBS Australia Investment Banking. David was critical in guiding our Financial Advisors through the early stages of the Covid-19 pandemic; he was highly convicted on staying long on growth assets when others in the market panicked and moved to a hedged USD. David is responsible for overseeing the development of Wilsons' global and domestic investment strategy. He holds a Master of Business and a Bachelor of Economics (Hons).

Wilsons Head of Australian Equities, John Lockton, was vital in guiding the firm on portfolio positioning within the volatile Covid landscape of extended lockdowns and the closing of international borders. John has worked in investment markets for almost 20 years’, having spent time at Morgan Stanley, Citigroup and Credit Suisse. His primary areas of focus are equity strategy, security analysis and portfolio management. John holds a Masters of Applied Finance, Graduate Diploma in Applied Finance and a Bachelor of Economics.
